Three prominent homebuilders have taken the initiative to encourage adults to read to young children and to help provide books to preschoolers who would otherwise have few opportunities to own them. In conjunction with Success By 6, Marrick Properties, Kaine Homes and Quality Built Homes have piloted the Builders and Books project. The builders provide a gift book with each new home settlement and make a matching contribution for children enrolled in local family literacy programs via the Calvert County First Book program. Each book is accompanied by information about the importance of early childhood stimulation for all children. The three businesses on average build a total of 60 new homes annually.
The Success By 6 Leadership Council, made up of local business leaders and child development professionals, selected the three to five age group as the target audience and chose Eric Carle's A House for Hermit Crab as an appropriate title for this unique project. Success By 6 hopes to recruit other builders, realtors, and landlords to the program in order to continue getting books into the hands of young children.
