Since 1999, Success By 6 has spearheaded efforts for public policy and systems change, and mobilized the community to generate ideas and build collaborative partnerships.
Through the Bank of America Foundation 5-year grant, Success by 6 established the home visitation programs, Healthy Families & HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) to provide a continuum of services for parents and children, ages birth through 5. Success by 6 continues to provide advocacy as well as resources and operational support for these programs. Success By 6 also participates in the Home Visitation Collaboration Consortium and the Casey Foundation Leadership in Action program to track current community outreach efforts and program outcomes.
In 2003, Success by 6 lobbied for funding for the Southern Maryland Childcare Resource Center from the state, with an aggressive letter-writing campaign and visits with legislators to restore $3 million of the $7 million that was cut from the Child Care Resource Centers throughout Maryland.
Since 2005, Success By 6 has led the Read to a Child campaign, partnering with local agencies and the Calvert Library. Through a countywide poster distribution, book plates and appointment cards, the Read to a Child campaign emphasizes the importance of early literacy with a simple message- just 20 minutes of reading to a child a day, can lead to a lifetime of success.
Every April, Success By 6 collaborates with the Calvert County Interagency Council for Families and Children and the Arts Council of Calvert County to hold a Month of the Young Child poster contest and commissioner’s proclamation, advocating for support of young children and their caregivers.
